A school in Merseyside is benefiting from lower energy bills thanks to the installation of 90 photovoltaic panels on its sports hall roof.

Maricourt Catholic High School in Maghull, which has almost 1500 pupils and 175 members of staff, is planning to use the money saved (expected to be around £5,000 per year) to finance further environmental projects.

Pupils at the school are already involved in the Mercy Environment Group (MEG) which recently won a silver award through the Eco-Schools initiative, an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey.

The locally sourced panels were installed by Liverpool firm Northern Solar and pupils and staff can keep track of how much carbon the panels are saving through a special display panel in the school’s reception.

Mike Schofield, Assistant Headteacher commented: "We are delighted with the solar panels; not only are they saving money for the school and reducing our carbon footprint but they are a highly visible reminder to the school community of our concern for the environment."
